.htaccess to Nginx

Terms of Service

About this tool

This free, local browser utility converts a supported subset of Apache .htaccess directives into an Nginx configuration draft and conversion notes. You can copy the output or download it as UTF-8 text. Use the tool only if you agree to these terms.

Your configuration and responsibility

You retain ownership of your input. Only process configurations you are entitled to use. Keep an unchanged backup and review the complete output and all notes before applying any change. The tool does not access your server, deploy configurations or reload Nginx.

Test the merged configuration with nginx -t and verify actual requests in a staging environment before using it on a live service. Check redirects, query strings, paths, access restrictions and application handling. A successful syntax test does not prove behavioral equivalence or security.

Partial conversion and technical limits

The output is not a complete, production-ready server configuration. A server wrapper does not supply all required domain, path, TLS or upstream settings. Unsupported directives, flags, condition combinations and module behavior require manual work. Apache per-directory matching differs from Nginx server and location matching. Do not assume a skipped directive is safe to remove.

Only UTF-8 input is supported, with or without a UTF-8 BOM. UTF-16, invalid UTF-8 files and NUL-containing input are rejected. Files must have a .htaccess, .conf or .txt extension. Both files and pasted input are limited to 1,048,576 UTF-8 bytes (1 MiB).

The parser runs on the browser's main thread, without a background worker or hard execution timeout. Large or complex inputs may temporarily make the page unresponsive. The visible notes list is limited to 500 entries and shortens long entries; the notes download contains the complete text. The tool does not execute rewrite patterns, simulate requests or validate your complete Nginx setup.

Privacy and saved output

Input and output are processed locally as described in the Privacy Policy. Clipboard content and downloaded files are under your browser's and operating system's control. Clear does not remove downloaded files or clipboard history.

Availability

The tool is provided "as is" and "as available," without a guarantee of compatibility, accuracy or uninterrupted operation. Nothing here limits rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Components and changes

The converter uses native browser features and no third-party runtime libraries. Features and these terms may change; updated terms apply to later use.
