How to remove EXIF and metadata from a file

  1. Select your file

Choose a photo, video, document or other file. The browser reads its metadata locally and checks whether this format supports removal.

  2. Choose all or selected fields

Remove all removable metadata, or select individual fields. GPS coordinates, capture dates, camera information and author tags can appear in different metadata groups.

  3. Download the cleaned copy

The tool rereads the output and lists any remaining detected fields. Download your new copy when ready. The original file is never overwritten.

Supported files and metadata removal

The file picker accepts any file type. Reading and writing support depend on the file's actual format and the bundled ExifTool engine. A file that can be inspected is not necessarily a file that can be cleaned.

What is EXIF metadata?

EXIF is information stored with many photos, including camera settings, capture time and sometimes GPS coordinates. Images can also contain XMP, IPTC, comments, thumbnails and manufacturer-specific data.

Videos and documents use additional metadata formats. This tool reads more than EXIF and lets you remove supported metadata without sending your file to a website.

Remove GPS location from photos

Choose “Remove all metadata” for the broadest supported removal, or use selected mode to review and remove GPS fields. Location may also be stored in XMP or other groups, so check all detected fields.

After processing, review the remaining metadata before downloading. Removing metadata does not conceal details visible in the photo itself.

EXIF remover FAQ

Are my files uploaded or stored?

No files are uploaded. The original and processed copy are held temporarily in browser memory so you can choose fields and download the output. Clearing the file or leaving the page releases the app's references. Your browser saves the cleaned copy only when you download it.

Can I remove all metadata from any file?

Not every format allows all metadata to be removed. Some fields are required for images or videos to work, and some formats can only be read by this engine. The tool checks your file, disables unsupported operations and lists detected fields that remain.

Can I remove only selected EXIF fields?

Yes. Choose selected mode, tick the fields you want to remove and keep the others unchecked. Fields that cannot be safely edited individually are read-only. A tag may have multiple copies across EXIF, XMP and IPTC, so select each copy you want removed.

Will removing metadata reduce image quality?

This tool does not resize or recompress photo pixels. However, removing orientation, color profiles or other display information can change how a viewer renders an image. Downloaded files should be checked in your usual viewer; the original remains unchanged.

Can I remove metadata from PDF files?

Yes. Choose remove-all or select individual writable PDF fields. ExifTool modifies PDFs incrementally, so earlier metadata may remain recoverable inside the document even when it no longer appears in the metadata list.

Can I remove all metadata from RAW files?

Yes, for RAW formats supported by the engine. You can also remove selected writable annotations and XMP fields. Camera metadata can affect RAW decoding, so check the downloaded copy in your usual viewer. The original file remains unchanged.

Does metadata remain after cleaning?

It can. The result shows detected fields removed and detected fields remaining. Required file properties, unsupported metadata and information the reader cannot detect may remain. This is a metadata editor, not a guarantee of complete forensic sanitization.
