How to edit EXIF and file metadata

  1. Choose your file

The metadata reader runs locally in your browser. You can select images, videos, documents or other files.

  2. Change metadata values

Search the fields, replace editable values, remove individual tags or add a common field. Read-only values stay visible.

  3. Preview and save

Review the original and proposed values. Create an edited copy, check the values read from that copy and choose “Save edited file”.

Supported file metadata and formats

The file picker accepts any file. Read and write support depend on its actual format and the bundled ExifTool engine. The editor does not convert files.

File typeWhat to expect
JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF and other imagesEdit supported EXIF, XMP and other writable fields. File structure and calculated values are read-only.
RAW camera filesWritable annotations and XMP fields only. Camera decoding information is protected.
MP4, MOV and supported video formatsEdit supported descriptive metadata. Required stream and playback properties are read-only.
PDF documentsEdit writable document metadata. Earlier values may remain recoverable because PDF edits are incremental.
Other documents and audioInspect where readable and edit where writable. Unsupported or encrypted files may not be editable.

Powered by ExifTool. See its metadata tag documentation for field types and format-specific support.

Edit EXIF, XMP and other metadata

EXIF is commonly used for camera settings and capture dates. File metadata can also include XMP, IPTC, PDF information and video container tags. This editor shows detected fields with their metadata groups so you can distinguish different copies.

Add author and copyright information

Add a creator name, description, title or copyright notice using the common-field selector. Metadata helps describe a file, but it does not prove authorship or prevent someone from copying it.

EXIF editor FAQ

Are files uploaded to edit metadata?

No. Files and edited copies remain in browser memory. The website delivers the app and metadata engine; it does not receive your selected files or extracted values.

Can I replace any metadata value?

You can replace supported writable values. Some fields are structural, calculated, binary or unsupported and are read-only. Dates and numerical fields require valid values. The engine may reject a value or normalize its representation; the result shows what was actually saved.

Can I edit metadata in files other than photos?

Yes, where the engine supports writing that format. PDFs, supported videos and other files can contain editable metadata. Selecting a file does not guarantee that its metadata is writable.

Does editing change the original file?

No. The editor creates a separate copy with an “-edited” filename. It does not overwrite your original, resize images or recompress their pixels. Display-related metadata changes may affect rendering.

Can I change dates and GPS coordinates?

Yes, for writable fields. Dates use YYYY:MM:DD HH:MM:SS. New GPS fields use positive decimal degrees and separate latitude N/S and longitude E/W references. Different metadata groups may contain additional copies.

Can I change camera history or prove a file is authentic?

No. Changing an editable metadata label changes the file’s recorded information. It does not change actual camera use, prove capture history or establish that a file is authentic.
